The department is a national leader of research into drugs, equipment and techniques to increase the safety of administering anesthesia to children. Medical staff members serve on national and international committees, and contribute to and edit anesthesiology textbooks.

Our investigators add valuable knowledge and information to the field of anesthesia and pain medicine in children. Research includes finding adequate methods for treating pediatric patients and tailoring procedures to fit the particular needs of children, and airway mechanics and devices for managing difficult airway management in children. In addition, the researchers at Lurie Anesthesia are part of a national collaborative research on outcomes in infants and children exposed to anesthetic s early in the developmental stage. In addition, the department contributes invaluable knowledge and expertise to research being conducted in other disciplines at Lurie Children’s.
